Underwater Environment

Exploring different environments, and experimenting with the use of textures. We had a Concept Artist guy called Emrah Elmasli who came up to speak about his work and his experience in the Animation Industry. Needless to say, his advice and tips were invaluable. You can check out his work here: http://www.emrahelmasli.com/

Concept Layout - Purple Wood

This is a speed-painting which took about 2 hours. The layout was out the top of my head but I'm pleased with the colours in this piece and the overall feel of it.

Concept Layouts

Here are two concept layouts for my film. They are just quick speed-paints, but I like the overall feel the to them. Once again I am experimenting with lighting and how it sets the scene. My only niggle is the lighting on the tree in the first image. I think only a dim halo of light ought to shine on the tree, blurring the outline as it shines from the fiery embers of the city. More light should be shining from the lights of the house, highlighting the bottom of the tree's branches. At the moment, I feel both pieces have quite an illustrative feel to them, due to the prominent outlines of the buildings enhancing their structure and bringing them into focus. I quite like the detail the thick outlines offer, however I intend to tone the outlines and give the pieces a more realistic/painterly edge.

Furthermore, my overall plan for my film is a slow pan-out from a room, gradually revealing the destruction of the city. Both pictures were done in Adobe Photoshop CS4

3rd Year Work

I have decided to work independently this year. My short film will be focussed on layout and environment. Each piece that I do will be detailed and I intend for my short film to have a story behind it, however the most important things I need to achieve is a sense of atmosphere through my use of colour and lighting. Here are some practise backgrounds which I started in October.

My first rough idea for a background. I am interested in fantastical/surreal settings. However this image was never completed due to it feeling a bit "flat."

I'm quite pleased with the use of colour and textures in this peice. The positioning of the trees create a sense of depth, and the use of beiges/dark greens give the image a moody feel.

A stereotypical image of a floating castle. I only did this to practise my skills at painting clouds/lighting ... due to my neglecting the detail on the castle.

One of the first ever developmental peices I started this year. I was originally going to set my film in a french bar, and the story was told through different light sources. I quite like the colours and overall feel of this peice.

2nd Year Artwork

My second year was very different to my first-year. I realised I was no animator; my strengths lay in layout/character design/concept art. However due to some difficulties in the group I was assigned, my role changed throughout the year and my work did not have the development it needed. I am rather proud of these concept pieces which I did for our short film.

1st Year Art Work

Kickstarting my year at the University of Lincoln with some character designs for a Sting featuring the University logo. I'd never painted digitally before so I getting used to a Wacom tablet was quite difficult. To see the development of my animation short visit: www.animationsting.blogspot.com
